Uttarakhand News: A case has emerged from Haridwar in Uttarakhand, where five people died on Saturday after drinking liquor distributed by a candidate for panchayat elections, while several others from two villages were hospitalised. Police said the condition of some of the people hospitalized is serious. The police state that two people have been arrested in connection with the incident.

Police said the SHO of Pathri police station has been suspended. Both the villages affected by the incident – Phulgarh and Shivgarh come under this police station area. But the Chief Minister’s Office report said the cause of death in the preliminary investigation was not attributed to the consumption of spurious liquor. The state government has ordered a magisterial inquiry into the matter.

Many people are hospitalized

Haridwar Senior Superintendent of Police Yogendra Yadav said that in Phulgarh village, three people – Raju, Amarpal and Bhola – died after consuming alcohol in Shivgarh village. He said that some more people are hospitalized. The SSP said that the quality of liquor is being checked. He said efforts are also being made to find out whether excessive drinking was the cause of death.

The electoral candidate had distributed liquor

Senior Superintendent of Police, Haridwar said that there is information that the candidate for the Panchayat elections had distributed liquor to the villagers and efforts are on to identify the candidate. He said two persons have been arrested in connection with the incident and SHO of Pathri police station Ravindra Singh has been suspended. The Chief Minister’s Office report, quoting Haridwar District Magistrate Vinay Shankar Pandey, said the preliminary investigation indicated that consumption of illicit liquor was not the cause of death in this case. Pandey said the exact cause of death would be known after the postmortem report and the magistrate’s inquest report come.
