Nitin Gadkari: Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari said on Thursday that despite India becoming the fifth largest economy in the world and being a prosperous country, its people are facing poverty, hunger, unemployment, casteism, untouchability and inflation. Gadkari, while attending an event in Nagpur, said that the gap between rich and poor is deepening in the country which needs to be bridged.

We are a rich country whose population is poor

The Minister for Road Transport and Highways said: “We are the fastest growing economy in the world and the fifth largest economy. We are a rich country with a poor population. Our country is prosperous but its people are poor who face hunger, unemployment, inflation, casteism, untouchability and many other problems which are not good for the progress of society.

The Union Minister said, “At this time, there is a need for social and economic equality in society. The gap between these two sections of society has increased. Economic inequality has also increased as has social inequality.” Emphasizing the need to work in areas like health and education, he said that to bridge the gap between the rich and the poor, attention must be directed to other such areas as well. He also called for working together for the development of 124 aspirational districts in the country.
