New Delhi: Congress leaders paid tribute to former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi on her birthday on Saturday and recalled her contribution to the nation. Party president Mallikarjun Kharge and former president Sonia Gandhi reached the ‘Shakti Sthal’ and paid floral tributes at Indira’s samadhi. Kharge tweeted: ‘I bow to India’s iron lady Mrs. Indira Gandhi on her birthday, an example of lifelong struggle, courage and effective leadership. He sacrificed his life to preserve the unity and integrity of India. Dedicated to the nation, we Indians remember his political resolve every moment.
Rahul Gandhi also paid tribute to grandmother
Former Congress president Rahul Gandhi on Saturday paid tribute to his grandmother Indira Gandhi by offering flowers on her portrait before starting the ‘Bharat Jodo Yatra’. He tweeted: ‘He grew up in the freedom struggle, learned from the great leaders of India, was his father’s darling. Durga was for the country, Kali was for the enemies – fearless, Tejaswini, Priyadarshini. Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra shared part of a speech by Indira Gandhi referring to her statement: “We have to work together, we have to move forward together, we have to ensure the victory of the country with unity” .

Paying tribute to Indira, Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot tweeted: ‘Indira Gandhi ji has made an incomparable contribution in maintaining the unity and integrity of the country. He sacrificed his life for this noble cause. During his tenure, India’s army, showing historic valor and power, defeated Pakistan and Bangladesh. Many other Congress leaders also paid tribute to Indira Gandhi and remembered her contribution and sacrifice.
Indira Gandhi was born in Prayag in 1917
The country’s first female Prime Minister Indira Gandhi was born on 19 November 1917 in Prayagraj. His father Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru was one of the greatest heroes of the freedom struggle and became the country’s first Prime Minister after independence. Indira was prime minister from January 1966 to March 1977. After that, she became prime minister again in 1980. He was assassinated by his bodyguards on October 31, 1984. After India’s assassination, his eldest son Rajiv Gandhi became the country’s prime minister.
