Shikhar Dhawan played a brilliant knock of 97 while Shubham Gill scored a brilliant 64 in his ODI comeback, opening batsman Dhawan (97 off 99 balls) and Gill (64 off 53) shared a 119-run partnership. Earlier, West Indies restricted India to 308 runs for seven wickets. West Indies needed 15 runs in the final to chase the record at Queens Park Oval, but Mohammad Siraj was able to stop Romario Shepherd (38 not out in 25). Kyle Meyers (75 off 68) and Shamar Brooks (46 off 61) at the top of the order raised West Indies’ hopes with a 117-run stand for the second wicket. West Indies did not have the ball and the match ended at 305 for six.

Shubman Gill bounced back with 64 while skipper Shikhar Dhawan missed out on a century by three runs, but the duo took India to 308 for seven in the first ODI against the West Indies on Friday. Gill, playing the first ODI since December 2020, scored 64 runs in 52 balls while Dhawan scored 97 runs in 99 balls. Shreyas Iyer scored 54 runs in 57 balls. Dhawan and Gill shared a partnership of 106 balls and 119 runs for the first wicket. Gill was run out in the 18th over, but in his innings he hit many catchy shots. He hit Alzarri Joseph for a six and then hit a brilliant four. He hit six fours and two sixes in his innings. He was run out on a pinpoint throw from West Indies captain Nicholas Pooran. This was Gill’s first fifty in ODI cricket. At the same time, Dhawan, who played only in the ODI format, hit 10 fours and three sixes in his innings. India were once looking to cross 350 runs, but the middle order collapsed after Dhawan fell victim to a nervous ninety. Dhawan has suffered a ‘nervous ninety’ for the seventh time in his career. India’s score at one stage was 213 for one wicket, which became 252 for five. Sanju Samson once again missed the golden opportunity and was dismissed for 12 runs. On the other hand, Suryakumar Yadav (13) had to bear the brunt of playing a poor stroke. Deepak Hooda made 27 and Axar Patel made 21 runs and added 42 runs for the sixth wicket to take India past 300 runs.
