But India had outclassed arch-rivals Pakistan in the semi-finals before securing victory over Sri Lanka in the summit clash.

The 2011 edition of the ICC World Cup was jointly hosted by India, Sri Lanka and Bangladesh. Pakistan was inevitably supposed to host it as well, but due to attacks on Sri Lankan players in Pakistan in 2009, the hosting rights were taken away from the country and the remaining three countries continued to host. India defeated the Men in Green in the second semi-final match, which was played on 30 March at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. Indian skipper MS Dhoni won the toss and chose to bat first, after which Sachin Tendulkar’s scores of 85 and 36 were on board. Suresh Raina’s cameo, India posted a total of 260 runs on the board. The total was not huge but was certainly enough to put Pakistan under pressure. As a result, they could only score 231 runs in return and were defeated by 29 runs.
