- AIADMK’s double-headed model scrapped
- Palaniswami elected interim general secretary of the party
- The Court made strict observations on Panneerselvam
AIADMK Tussle: The AIADMK (AIADMK) on Monday scrapped the dual leadership model of the largest opposition party in Tamil Nadu. AIADMK elected Edappadi K. Palaniswami (EPS) as its interim secretary general. At the same time, O Panneerselvam (OPS) was excluded from his primary membership to work against party interests. Palaniswami, 68, was elected party leader at a meeting of the AIADMK General Council. Madras High Court rejected Panneerselvam’s petition for adjournment of the rival faction. Shortly after the court ruling, he (Palaniswamy) was given full powers to lead the party in the midst of a protracted internal power struggle.
Panneerselvam expelled Palaniswami from the party
In this case, the judge said the courts would certainly refrain from interfering in the party’s private affairs. Violence erupted between Palaniswami and Panneerselvam’s supporters in and around AIADMK headquarters ahead of a General Council meeting at a wedding manapaper, after which authorities sealed the premises. There are also reports that some people have been injured in the collision.
AIADMK approved the proposal to abolish the top two positions as coordinators and joint coordinators previously occupied by Panneerselvam and Palaniswami. In return, Panneerselvam “expelled” Palaniswami from the primary membership of the party. Palaniswami and 71-year-old Panneerselvam are both former prime ministers. Panneerselvam was a loyal loyalist of the late Jayalalithaa. AIADMK has worked hard to maintain unity following the death of its chief Jayalalithaa on December 5, 2016.
The Court made strict observations on Panneerselvam
AIADMK also decided to hold organizational elections in four months to formally elect a general secretary. It has amended several bylaws, including new criteria for fighting for the party’s top post. Judge Krishnan Ramaswamy handed down the verdict, which enabled the EPS Group to hold a meeting of the General Council, the highest decision-making body in AIADMK. The court also expressed dissatisfaction with Panneerselvam’s repeated approach to the court.
The judge said that in the present case, the applicants turn to the courts in an attempt to use the courts as a tool for their defense, which does not receive the support of the party members. The court said it is regrettable that the leader, who has the post of coordinator, instead of winning the trust of the members, has time to repeatedly approach the court and seek intervention. The judge said: “What the applicant is not able to achieve, he wants to get it through the court, but the court will not interfere in the party’s private affairs against the interests of thousands of other members of the party upon request. Of only one or two members . ” will do it.
Disagreement in AIADMK benefits DMK
While the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) is in an electively advantageous position in light of the ongoing struggle and unrest in the AIADMK in Tamil Nadu, the BJP, which is currently on the brink, may strive to have a larger share in electoral politics. Although most party workers and officials in AIADMK appear to support the loyal EK Palaniswami, the expelled leader O Panneerselvam has influence over several parts of the party workers in selected areas of Tamil Nadu.
