New Delhi: Retired Supreme Court judge Rituraj Awasthi has been appointed as the chairman of the Law Commission on Monday. Law Minister Kiren Rijiju has provided this information. He also informed that Justices KT Sankaran, Professor Anand Paliwal, Professor DP Verma, Professor Raka Arya and M Karunanidhi have been appointed as members of the commission.

Rijiju tweeted, “The Central Government has appointed retired Supreme Court Justice Rituraj Awasthi as Chairman of the Law Commission, while Justice KT Sankaran, Professor Anand Paliwal, Professor DP Verma, Professor (Dr) Raka Arya and Shri M. Karunanidhi as Chairman of the Commission. Member have been designated.

Who is Rituraj Awasthi

Justice Awasthi graduated in law from Lucknow University in 1986. He was registered as an advocate on February 1, 1987. He has also served as the Assistant Solicitor General of India in Lucknow. He was appointed as an Additional Judge of the Allahabad High Court on 13 April 2009 and became a permanent Judge on 24 December 2010.

Rituraj also came into limelight when he received death threats for delivering the verdict in the Karnataka hijab case. The police had also arrested some people in this case.
