India have suffered a setback ahead of the upcoming tri-series against South Africa. Fast bowler Mohammed Shami, suffering from injury problems, is unlikely to be fit for the series. Shami was ruled out of the series against Australia after being found Covid positive. According to media reports, the team led by Rohit Sharma will enter the field without Mohammed Shami and Deepak Hooda.

On Sunday 25 September, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Hooda was unavailable for selection in the third match of the series against Australia. Now it is learned that Deepak Hooda may have to retrain at NCA. The same report says that left-arm spinner Shahbaz Ahmed and batsman Shreyas Iyer will replace Hardik Pandya and Deepak Hooda in the T20I series against South Africa. Meanwhile, Umesh Yadav accompanied the team to Thiruvananthapuram and is set to retain his place in the team after replacing Shami against Australia. The absence of Shami and Hooda is being considered as a major setback for the hosts.
