The T20 World Cup is paramount for the Indian team right now and Gill is not a part of the Indian team as far as the shortest format is concerned. New Delhi. The ODI series against Zimbabwe will be a great opportunity for KL Rahul to test his momentum ahead of the Asia Cup and he will want to open the innings with Shikhar Dhawan in the upcoming matches. If Rahul, who is leading the team on this tour, opens the innings, then Shubman Gill, who played this role with Dhawan during the West Indies tour, may have to come in to bat at the third order. The T20 World Cup is paramount for the Indian team right now and Gill is not a part of the Indian team as far as the shortest format is concerned. In such a situation, before the Asia Cup starts on August 27, the team management would like to give enough batting opportunity to Rahul, who is returning from injury. Head coach Rahul Dravid will not be in the squad for the short three-match series starting in Harare on Thursday (August 18). In his place, NCA (National Cricket Academy) chief VVS Laxman will play the role of coach. It is almost certain that Laxman will follow the plan set by the head coach.

Rahul’s return has also created problems for young top-order batsman Gill. Gill batted brilliantly in the 50-over format in the West Indies. He was named Man of the Series after his match-winning knocks of 64, 43 and 98 not out. Former national team selector and Test opener Devang Gandhi said on this issue, “I think Shubman is being groomed properly by the Indian team management. He has done exceptionally well in ODIs on Caribbean soil. I think the team prepares players in such a way that they can hit at any position. For this particular series, Shubman may have to come in at number three.” Former Indian player Deep Das Gupta also agreed with Devang’s words. “It’s difficult for a player after being in such a good rhythm. The team’s aim for now will be to prepare Rahul as an opener for the Asia Cup T20. He should get a lot of batting time and that is my priority. I think it will be a short-term arrangement as I think Shubman is being groomed as an opener for the ODI World Cup.
