Dubai. Virat Kohli has transformed himself a lot in the last three years and it was evident as he smiled and kissed his wedding ring after scoring his much-awaited 71st international century. Kohli had to wait for 1020 days for his international century. It was also a very long wait for Indian cricket lovers. When he finished waiting, he breathed a sigh of relief.

They did not celebrate it with the same enthusiasm as before. After scoring a century in the Asia Cup match against Afghanistan, Kohli smiled and said, “The last two-and-a-half years have taught me a lot. I turn 34 in a month and celebrating in anger is a thing of the past.” Kohli on Thursday scored an unbeaten 122 off 61 balls, his maiden century in T20 cricket. With this, India defeated Afghanistan by a huge margin of 101 runs. Kohli took a month-long sabbatical ahead of the Asia Cup and then found that there was nothing wrong with his technique and that he could not possibly understand the turmoil of his mind. “A lot of things were going through my head,” he said. People said I am making this mistake. I watched videos of my best times and my attitude was the same. My technique was the same as before, the only difference was that I was unable to explain to anyone what was going on in my mind.

Kohli said: “At the end of the day, as a person, you know what position you are in. People want their own opinion, but they may not be aware of how you feel.” Kohli scored a century in international cricket almost three years later, and that too in a format he had little hope of, with his 71st century he equaled Ricky Ponting for most international centuries.

Sachin Tendulkar is on top with 100 centuries. “I was really shocked,” he said. Hadn’t thought of a century in this format. It is the result of many things. The team helped a lot.” Kohli credited his actress Anushka Sharma who stood by him during the tough times. He said: “I know there was a lot of chatter outside. I kissed my ring. You’re looking at me here because a human made it easy for me. She’s Anushka. This century is dedicated to him and our daughter Vamika.
