Good news: Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma on Friday inaugurated a Safe Motherhood Transit Home in West Garo Hills district under the Mukhyamantri Surakshit Matritva Yojana (CM-SMS) to ensure that early maternal mortality can be curbed. Sources in the state health department said authorities have cited maternal mortality as a major concern, recording 248 maternal deaths in 2020-21. Sangma said maternal deaths have decreased by more than 35 percent in the last six months compared to the same period last year.

The aim is to reduce maternal deaths

“The infant mortality rate is 29 points against the national average of 28 for the year 2020-21. We are trying to bring it down from the national average very soon,” he said. Inaugurating the Safe Maternity Transit Home at Asang in Rongram block of West Garo Hills district, the chief minister said the state government has given priority to the care of pregnant mothers through the Matru program and the Safe Motherhood Scheme, which aims to increase institutional delivery and reduce maternal deaths.

Setting up transit housing for mothers

The key components of CM-SMS are – setting up transit homes for high-risk mothers, providing them with food and space for their children, arranging transport with local entrepreneurs for pick-up and drop-off, support for spouse or family members. members to accompany and stay with the mother, wage compensation up to Rs.1,000 per person and award for the best performing village once a year under each PHC.

The Chief Minister also informed that 80 Primary Health Centers (PHCs) in the state have already completed the work of setting up transit homes while 84 PHCs have arranged vehicle assistance and are involved in the scheme by adding other programs including JSY and JSSK.
