India on Wednesday successfully test-fired ballistic missile Agni-III from APJ Abdul Kalam Island off Odisha coast. Sources from the Defense Research and Development Organization (DRDO) provided this information. Agni-3 is a medium-range ballistic missile. The test was part of a routine training launch conducted under the direction of the Strategic Forces Command (SFC), according to an official statement. The launch was carried out to a predetermined area, according to the statement. The test of the missile was a complete success and it fulfilled various parameters.

The Agni-III is the third missile included in the Agni missile series and was first test-fired on 9 July 2006. However, it developed a technical snag and fell into the sea off the Odisha coast without hitting the target. The missile is capable of carrying a nuclear warhead and hitting a target 3,500 km away.

The Agni-III missile was successfully test-fired in its second flight in 2007 and again in its third consecutive launch in 2008. The launch comes a month after India successfully test-fired the indigenous new-generation medium-range ballistic missile Agni Prime for the Odisha coast. The Defense Research Development Organization said the missile has a range of between 1,000 km and 2,000 km.

The last test of the missile was carried out from the same base on December 18 last year, which was also successful.
