News in Uttar Pradesh: Bharatiya Janata Party’s newly appointed state president Bhupendra Singh Chaudhary will reach Lucknow on Monday, August 29. State General Secretary Subrata Pathak said in a statement that the party’s state president Chaudhary will reach Lucknow from New Delhi by Shatabdi Express at around 10 pm. 12:30 p.m. He said that when the state president reaches Lucknow, he will be welcomed by party officials and workers at Charbagh railway station. Chaudhary will visit Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Smritika at KKC Tiraha, where he will pay floral tributes to the statue of the Sanatani thinker. He will also pay floral tributes at the statues of Father of the Nation Mahatma Gandhi, Babasaheb Dr. Bhim Rao Ambedkar, Sardar Patel, former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and former Prime Minister Chaudhary Charan Singh in the Lok Bhavan among others. After this, Chaudhary will reach the party’s state headquarters, where he will be welcomed and felicitated. Apart from Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, other senior leaders of the party will be present on this occasion.

The BJP wants to strengthen its hold in the Jat community

Choudhary’s appointment is seen as an attempt by the BJP to reach out to the influential Jat community, which has been at the forefront of farmers’ protests against three controversial farm laws. Choudhary’s appointment as state president takes on significance as the BJP has enjoyed popular support in the region since 2014. It is also seen as an attempt to counter the Rashtriya Lok Dal (RLD) and Samajwadi Party (SP) alliance in western Uttar Pradesh and influence Jat -the voters in favor of the BJP. Western UP has 29 Lok Sabha seats. Chaudhary replaces Swatantra Dev Singh, who has been appointed as a minister in the Yogi Adityanath government. Since the chief minister is from eastern Uttar Pradesh, the BJP also wants to create a regional balance with the appointment of Chaudhary from western Uttar Pradesh as the state president of the BJP.

Chaudhary’s political journey

54-year-old Chaudhary was born in a farming family in Mahendra Sikanderpur, Moradabad. In his early days, he joined the Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) and joined the BJP in 1991. He held various positions including treasurer and district president of the Moradabad District Party Unit. In 1999, he contested the Lok Sabha elections against the then Samajwadi Party chief, Mulayam Singh Yadav, but lost. He held the post of Regional Secretary and then became Regional President and held this post till 2017. He first entered the Upper House in 2016 when the party made him a member of the Legislative Council and then a Minister in the Panchayati Raj Department. In Yogi Adityanath’s second rule, he also held the same ministry and rejoined the Legislative Council in June 2022. As a minister, his achievements include building a record number of toilets under the Swachh Bharat Mission and declaring all 75 districts as open defecation.
