Both Uttar Pradesh Police and Delhi Police have registered an FIR against filmmaker Leena Manimekalai. The plaintiffs had alleged a derogatory portrayal of Hindu deities. A case was filed against the UP police for criminal conspiracy, offense at the place of worship, deliberate damage to religious sentiments and causing breach of peace.

Delhi Police and Uttar Pradesh Police have filed an FIR against the creators of the movie ‘Kaali’, whose poster shows a Hindu goddess (Maa Kali) smoking a cigarette. The FIR has accused of criminal conspiracy, offenses in a place of worship, deliberately damaging religious sentiments and causing breaches of the peace.

In the FIR, registered by the IFSO unit of Delhi Police, sections 153A and 295A of the IPC have been imposed on Leena Manimekalai.

A controversy erupted after filmmaker Leena Manimekalai shared the poster of her film on social media. The poster depicts a woman in costume by the goddess Kali. In the picture she is seen smoking a cigarette. The actress is seen as Maa Kali in the film. With her usual attire of a three-fork seal in hand, the actress, who plays the role of Devi, is shown waving the pride flag of the LGBTQ + community. Earlier Monday, the Indian High Commission of Canada issued a statement on the “smoking black” poster, urging Canadian authorities and event organizers to withdraw “all such provocative material”.

Manimekalai said she will continue to use her voice fearlessly until she is alive. The poster has taken social media by storm with the hashtag ‘Arrest Leena Manimekalai’ claiming that the filmmaker is hurting religious feelings and a member of a group called ‘Gau Mahasabha’ says he has lodged a complaint against the filmmaker. Complaint has been lodged with Delhi police.
