Aggressive batsman Shimron Hetmyer has been dropped from the West Indies T20 World Cup squad for not making a scheduled flight to join the team in Australia. Hetmyer has been replaced by Samarth Brooks. Hetmyer was due to leave Guyana on Saturday but the West Indies Cricket Board allowed him to board the flight on Monday due to his family reasons. That meant he would not be available for Wednesday’s T20 match against Australia in the Gold Coast.

He informed the West Indies Cricket Board that he might not even make the next scheduled flight. The selectors then decided to drop him from the team and replace him with Brooks. Jimmy Adams, West Indies’ director of cricket, said in a statement: “We moved Shimron’s flight to Monday due to family reasons, but it was made clear to him that if the flight was delayed further we would have someone to replace him .” There will be no option but to keep another player as we cannot compromise the team’s preparation for this important event.”

Adams said Brooks would join the team as soon as possible. Brooks made his T20 debut in December last year and averages 23 in 11 matches. Hetmyer participated in the last WC. He has played 50 T20 matches so far, scoring an average of 21 runs. The West Indies are scheduled to play two T20Is against Australia this week before kicking off their campaign against Scotland in Hobart on October 17 in the T20 World Cup opener.
