Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation: The Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation on Thursday announced the appointment of Convergence Foundation founder and chief executive officer (CEO) Ashish Dhawan to its board of directors. Dr. Helen D. Gail, president of Spelman College, USA, has also been included in the foundation’s board of directors. Gates Foundation CEO Mark Suzman, co-chairs Bill Gates and Melinda French Gates along with new members Strive Masiwa, Baroness Nemat (Minouche) Shafiq, Thomas J. Tierney will serve on the board, a statement said. Besides being the Executive Director of the Convergence Foundation, Dhawan is also the President of Ashoka University and the Central Square Foundation, a non-profit organization working to improve the quality of education for children in India.

The Gates Foundation has worked closely with the Government of India and other partners since 2003 on a range of issues including healthcare, sanitation, gender equality, agricultural development and economic empowerment. Dhawan said, “The foundation has made exemplary contributions to India’s development over the last 15 years and I am delighted to be on the board.” Prior to becoming president of Spelman College, Gail was president and CEO of the Chicago Community Trust. Bill Gates said: “At a moment of great need and opportunity in global health and development, Helen and Ashish bring together unique ways of thinking. They have been great partners in the pursuit of a world where everyone can live healthy and meaningful lives .” Mark Suzman added: “I am thrilled to welcome Helen and Ashish on board and to be among the first in this new capacity. I look forward to working together.”
