West Bengal News: The Kolkata Police on Wednesday said its Special Task Force (STF) has arrested a resident of Malda district who was an active ally of Al-Qaeda in the Indian Subcontinent (QQIS). The name of the arrested person is Hasnath Shaikh alias Shahid Majumdar. He is the sixth AQIS member to be arrested by the Kolkata Police STF in less than two months. It is learned that another AQIS member Faizal Ahmed alias Shahid Majumdar was arrested on September 11 from Saharanpur in Uttar Pradesh. Ahmed, originally from Bangladesh, was on the most wanted list of both Kolkata Police and West Bengal Police for a long time. STF officials came to know about Hasnath Sheikh’s whereabouts in Bengaluru from Ahmed. “The two were responsible for brainwashing and fresh recruits for the AQIS sleeper cell,” confirmed a police officer in the city.

On September 3, the STF in coordination with the Maharashtra Police’s Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) arrested two residents of Bengal with alleged AQIS links from Mumbai. The arrested persons – Sameer Hussain and Saddam Hussein – are residents of Diamond Harbor in South 24 Parganas district. Both were wanted for a long time by the STF and the Criminal Police (CID). On August 17, the STF had arrested two AQIS members – Rakib Sarkar and Qazi Ehsanullah – from Shashan village in Barasat block of North 24 Parganas district. Sarkar hails from Ganganagar in South 24 Parganas district while Qazi Ahsanullah hails from Arambagh in Hooghly district.
