New Delhi. KL Rahul has been declared fit by the Indian Cricket Board’s medical team after which the opener has been handed the captaincy of the team for the three-match ODI series against Zimbabwe. Shikhar Dhawan was earlier named captain for this series but will now take over the role of vice-captain. Rahul was recovering from a hernia operation. He was supposed to play in the series against the West Indies but was unable to play as he tested positive for COVID-19.

Rahul took time to recover from the illness and hence he was not picked in the squad for the Zimbabwe tour earlier. He was given time to get fit so he would be fully fit until the Asia Cup. However, the medical team has now declared Rahul fit after fulfilling the criteria for selection. Rahul is the first choice vice-captain in all formats along with captain Rohit Sharma, so Dhawan was named vice-captain for this series when he became available. With Rahul joining the team, the total number of team members has increased to 16 as the selectors did not replace him with any other player. But Rahul’s presence means that Ruturaj Gaikwad is unlikely to get a chance.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, Rishabh Pant, Shreyas Iyer, Jasprit Bumrah and Mohammed Shami have been rested for this series. Bumrah is recovering from a back injury and will also miss the Asia Cup, which starts on August 27 in the United Arab Emirates. Out of the team going to Zimbabwe, only Rahul and Deepak Hooda are in the main team.
