Sri Lanka all out for 105
Afghanistan bowled out Sri Lanka for 105 in 19.4 overs in the opening match of the main event of the Asia Cup T20 tournament on Saturday with a dominant performance by the bowlers led by Fazlhaq Farooqui (3 for 11). Bhanuka Rajapaksa contributed 38 and Chamika Karunaratne contributed 31 runs for Sri Lanka. Rajapaksa hit five fours and a six in his 29-ball knock, while Karunaratne hit three fours and a six in his 38-ball knock. For Afghanistan, captain Mohammad Nabi and Mujeeb ur Rahman took two wickets each, while Naveen-ul-Haq took one wicket. After winning the toss and electing to bowl, Farooqui got Afghanistan off to a good start with Kusal Mendis (2) and Charith Aslanka (nil) off the last two balls of the first over.
Naveen-ul-Haq, who came to bowl in the second over, gave Afghanistan the third success by having Pathum Nisanka (3) caught by wicketkeeper Rahmanullah Gurbaz. After this, Farooqui bowled a maiden over which after three overs, Sri Lanka were five runs for three wickets. Bhanuka Rajapaksa hit a six against Naveen in the fourth over, while Danushka Gunatilaka eased the pressure by hitting a four. Both scored 20 runs in the last over of the powerplay against Azmatullah Omerzai, hitting two fours each. This reduced Sri Lanka’s score to 41 for three after six overs. The dangerous pair of both was broken by Mujeeb ur Rahman in the eighth over by dismissing Gunatilka.

He scored 17 runs in 17 balls and shared a 44-run partnership with Rajapaksa for the fourth wicket. Mujeeb had Vanindu Hasaranga (two runs) caught by captain Mohammad Nabi in the 10th over of the innings, then the same Nabi walked without opening the account of Sri Lanka captain Dasoon Shanaka on the first ball of the next over. Rajapaksa, who batted brilliantly, and Mahish Teekshana (nil) were run out in the 13th over off two consecutive balls. Rajapaksa, trying to steal a run on the over, was run out by Nabi. Wicketkeeper Gurbaj showed the way to the pavilion on the throw from Naveen-ul-Haq to Teekshana.
Nabi then dismissed Mathish Pathirana (five) off the last ball of his spell, giving Afghanistan their ninth success for 75 runs in the 15th over. However, Karunaratne then shared a 30-run partnership with 11th-order batsman Dilshan Madushanka (one not out) to take the team’s score past 100. He became Farooqui’s third victim in the last over of the innings.
